The new cargo vehicle terminal at Benapole port, constructed to ease cargo congestion, is set to become operational in November.

Built at a cost of Tk329 crore, the terminal can accommodate 1,200 to 1,500 trucks, aiming to reduce cargo buildup and enhance import-export efficiency, according to port officials.

Spanning 24 acres, the terminal was constructed with Tk109 crore allocated for land acquisition and Tk220 crore for infrastructure.

It includes a parking yard, cargo building, port service building, utility building, fire station, modern toilet complex, weighbridge, medical facilities, and rest areas. Decorated with lighting, furniture, and plants, the terminal will support the daily import of approximately 7,000 to 8,000 tons of goods from India, helping alleviate longstanding congestion at the port.

According to port authority officials, the construction began in February 2022, with a project budget of Tk329 crore.

Infrastructure was built by contractors TBEAL, NDEL RSSIJV, ATTL, and ST Technology Limited, with quality assurance testing conducted by Buet, Kuet, and in-house labs.

Benapole C&F Agent Association President Shamsur Rahman commented: “With the terminal’s capacity to hold 1,500 trucks, we expect faster processing and reduced costs for importers, as delays in clearance have been a financial burden. The efficient unloading process will also boost government revenue.”

Deputy Director (Administration) of Benapole port, Mohammad Moshiur Rahman, said that preparations are nearly complete, with the terminal’s inauguration expected in early November.

"Once operational, the terminal will boost both the port's capacity and revenue," he said, adding that all infrastructure work adhered to the highest quality standards.

Deputy Director of Benapole Land Port Mamun Kabir Tarafdar shared that the terminal will help resolve long-standing congestion and facilitate trade between India and Bangladesh, benefiting the port’s overall capacity and revenue.
