A Gaibandha court on Wednesday dismissed a defamation case against Mahmudur Rahman, the acting editor of the Amar Desh newspaper.

Judge Jannatul Ferdous of the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-2 in Gaibandha gave the order after a hearing.

Mahmudur Rahman's lawyer, Manzur Morshed Babu, confirmed the development.

The case was filed against him by the president of the district Jubo League, Sardar Mohammad Shahid Hasan Loton, on December 11, 2017, in a lower court in Gaibandha.

Lawyer Manzur Morshed Babu said: "After the case was filed, an investigation began, and the trial continued in court for a long time, during which evidence was collected.”

“However, the court found the evidence presented to be insufficient, leading to Mahmudur Rahman's acquittal," he added.

According to the details of the case, Mahmudur Rahman participated in a seminar titled "The Role of Media in Restoring Democracy," organized by the Bangladesh Democratic Council at the National Press Club on December 1, 2017.

He was accused of making derogatory remarks about Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and British MP Tulip Siddiq during the event.

In response to this incident, Shahid Hasan Loton filed a defamation case.
