The adviser arrived in Rajshahi just a day before a scheduled parade for newly appointed ASPs, but it ultimately did not take place

Update : 20 Oct 2024, 08:58 PM

Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Jahangir Alam on Sunday said the situation surrounding police responsibilities has significantly improved since August 5, although he acknowledged that both the public and the police have yet to reach a satisfactory level of performance, emphasizing the need for police to be "people-friendly" despite the dedication of most officers being hindered by the actions of a few over-enthusiastic individuals.

Speaking at a meeting with police officers at the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police headquarters in Rajshahi, the adviser expressed optimism that the situation would normalize completely and urged police members to continue their efforts to maintain law and order effectively.

He pointed out several ongoing issues within the Bangladesh Police, including inadequate living conditions and food quality for officers.

He said that many lower-ranking officers are owed TA and DA bills, instructing that these dues should be cleared.

He also recommended that transfers and postings be considered within the same range to facilitate the officers' duties.

Regarding damaged police stations from past protests, he promised swift repair work and urged relevant authorities to submit requests for necessary repairs.

He suggested exploring the possibility of constructing police station buildings on acquired land rather than relying on rented properties.

Training parade for newly appointed ASPs cancelled

In a related development, the training completion parade for newly appointed assistant superintendents of police (ASPs) from the 40th BCS (Police) cadre in Sardah, Rajshahi, was unexpectedly cancelled.

The home adviser arrived in Rajshahi just a day before the scheduled parade, but it ultimately did not take place. He did not provide any comments on the cancellation.

During a media briefing at the RMP headquarters, when asked about the parade, he said: "It has been cleared. Stay well," before ending the briefing.

The adviser had travelled to Rajshahi to oversee the ASP training parade at the Bangladesh Police Academy, where he had planned to stay overnight.

The authorities announced that the parade was postponed due to "unavoidable circumstances," though the specific reasons were not disclosed, and the adviser declined to answer further questions.

Typically, officers recruited through the BCS complete a year of basic training at the Sardah Police Academy, concluding with the parade that signifies the end of their training before they commence fieldwork.
