Seven fishermen sent to jail for violating fishing ban

A ban on fishing in the Meghna River is in effect from October 13 to November 3 to protect mother ilish

Seven fishermen have been detained in Raipur, Lakshmipur, for violating a ban on fishing in the Meghna River.

Following this, a mobile court sentenced six of them to 15 days in prison and one to seven days.

The order was issued by Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) of the upazila, Shahed Arman.

The operation took place in the early hours of Saturday at the Chandar Khal fish landing center in the North Charbangshi union.

Among those sentenced are Md Amir Hossain, 26, Khorshed Alam,19, Sohaq, 21, Borhan, 32, Harun Bepari, 27, and Anwar Chakidaar, 30, who each received 15 days of jail time. Jasim, 22, was sentenced to 7 days.

During the operation, authorities seized 100,000 metres of fishing nets and seven boats from them.

Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Emdadul Haque, Coast Guard personnel, army members, and local police were also present during the raid.

Assistant Commissioner (Land) Shahed Arman confirmed the operation, saying: "Nine fishermen involved in catching ilish were apprehended from Chandar Khal. Six were sentenced to 15 days, and one to seven days."

"The other two were minors, and they were released with a guardian's bond," he added.

He further mentioned: "Joint operations to protect mother ilish are ongoing, with the Fisheries Department and administration working together to implement government directives."

A ban on fishing in the Meghna River in Lakshmipur is in effect from October 13 to November 3 for a duration of 22 days to protect mother ilish.

Violators may face up to two years in prison or a fine of Tk5,000, or both.
