Three to four cocktail explosions were reported during a sudden procession in Mohakhali on Thursday morning, police said.

The incident took place around 9am on the main road near Mohakhali bus terminal.

According to Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station, three people, including a woman, were detained in connection with the incident. They are Mizanur Rahman Howlader, 40, Shamim R Baby, 50, and Shamim Hossain, 48.

Witnesses said around 10 to 15 people gathered in the morning, carrying placards and attempting to hold a human chain program demanding the trial of former chief adviser to the interim government Dr Muhammad Yunus and former health adviser Nurjahan Begum, alleging their responsibility for the deaths of children from preventable measles, as well as compensation for victims’ families.

Police said the group also had placards linked to a banned organisation.

Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station OC Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman said: “Three to four cocktail explosions took place in the morning. People linked to the Awami League and its affiliated organisations were involved. Three individuals have been detained.”

DMP Tejgaon Division Additional Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Imran said the detainees were being interrogated.

“We did not have prior information about any specific political program. The banner contained slightly different wording. The matter is under investigation,” he said.
