Wedding crashers: First wife derails groom’s second marriage plans with a stick

First wife claims she is owed Tk4 lakh in dowry

Update : 19 Oct 2024, 11:46 AM

On his way to marry for the second time, groom Shafiqul Islam was ambushed by his first wife, Parveen Khatun, and her relatives.

The attack left Shafiqul and three of his companions injured, as they were beaten with sticks after being pulled out of their microbus.

The incident occurred on Friday evening, in Rasulpurup (Fakirpara) village under Sadullapur upazila of Gaibandha district.

Police rescued the groom and the injured from the scene, after which they returned home following basic medical treatment.

Shafiqul, a 30-year-old from Rasulpurup village, had divorced Parveen three months ago.

The two were married in January 2022 with a dowry set at Tk4 lakh.

According to Shafiqul and his family, Parveen and her relatives stopped their microbus on route to the bride’s house in Patillakuda-Chokdariya (Uttarpara) village and launched an unprovoked attack.

However, Parveen Khatun claimed that Shafiqul had divorced her after two and a half years of marriage but had not yet paid her the dowry.

She said she blocked his path to the second wedding demanding her dues.

Confirming the incident, local union parishad (UP) member Chaper Ali said: "Parveen stopped Shafiqul to demand her unpaid dowry.”

“Police were alerted and quickly brought the situation under control," he added.
