Two people, including a child, drowned when a boat capsized on their way to offer prayers at a Durga Puja mandp in Netrokona.

The incident occurred on Friday morning in Horindhara village, under Kalmakanda upazila of the district.

Dr Shamim Ara Nipa, a physician at Kalmakanda Upazila Health Complex, confirmed the deaths.

The deceased have been identified as Amit Talukder, 7, the son of Biplob Talukder from Harindhara village, and Ritu Talukder, 18, the daughter of Sanjay Talukder, also from the same village.

Local resident Kajol Talukder stated that the boat sank while the group was crossing from Purbapara to Pashchimpara Durga Puja mandap in Horindhara village.

According to the family and local sources, there is a Durga Puja pavilion located in the Paschimpara area of Harindhara village, which residents from Purvapara usually reach by small boats.

On Friday morning, six people boarded a boat to attend the Maha Ashtami. Shortly after setting off, the boat capsized. While four of them managed to swim to safety, Amit and Ritu drowned.

Their bodies were recovered and taken to Kalmakanda Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced them dead.
