Government, semi-government and autonomous offices across the country reopened on Sunday after a five-day holiday for Durga Puja and the weekend.
Banks, insurance companies, the stock market and private-sector establishments also resumed operations.
According to the official holiday calendar, October 20 was a holiday by executive order for Durga Puja (Maha Navami), followed by a public holiday on October 21 for Vijaya Dashami. Thursday, October 22, was also declared a holiday by executive order.
The holidays were followed by the regular weekend on Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24, keeping offices and courts closed for five consecutive days.
With the holidays over, traffic and commuter numbers increased on the capital’s streets from Sunday morning as people returned to work.
Traffic congestion was reported in several areas, including Badda, Rampura, Mohakhali, Farmgate, Shahbagh and Tejgaon.
Rafiqul Islam, deputy commissioner of the Tejgaon Traffic Division, said the volume of people and vehicles had increased as offices reopened after the extended break.
He added that although traffic congestion occurred earlier in the morning, the situation had since returned to normal.
