Khagrachhari communal violence caused damages amounting to nearly Tk7 crore.
The Khagrachhari district administration reported that the recent incidents of violence in the Chittagong hill district caused damages amounting to nearly Tk7 crore.
Efforts are ongoing to restore peace in the troubled region, with local leaders holding peace and harmony meetings in various communities to maintain coexistence.
Meanwhile, local authorities have said that in the communal attacks, vandalism, and arson in Khagrachhari and Dighinala, three people were killed, 20 injured, and 87 permanent shops and 94 mobile roadside shops were set on fire. Among the permanent shops destroyed, 30 belonged to the Bengali community and 57 to the ethnic minority.
Several shop owners have already started rebuilding their infrastructure in the affected areas of Dighinala upazila in Khagrachhari. Many are concerned about how they will recover financially, with some stating they have no way to pay off their previous debts.
Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner Md Sahiduzzaman said that damages totalling nearly Tk7 crore had been estimated. A list of the losses has been prepared.
He mentioned that the families of the deceased have received Tk25,000 each, and the district administration has distributed checks amounting to Tk7 lakh to the affected people in Dighinala.
The deputy commissioner, superintendent of police, zone commander, and Information and Broadcasting Adviser, Nahid Islam, inspected Larma Square in Dighinala.
They urged everyone to remain calm and assured that the culprits would be brought to justice following an investigation.
A case was filed by the police at Dighinala police station against unidentified persons in connection with the violence.
Dighinala police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Zakaria confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that the situation in the area is currently stable.
