  • Water flow at Teesta Barrage point recorded at 51.83cm
Update : 27 Sep 2024, 08:14 PM

Due to continuous rainfall over two days and upstream water flow, the water level of the Teesta River is rising rapidly, causing flooding in the low-lying areas.

In response, 44 gates of the Teesta Barrage have been opened.

At 3pm on Friday, the water flow at the Teesta Barrage point was recorded at 51.83cm, which is 32cm below the danger level, according to local authorities.

On Thursday morning, the water level was 65cm below the danger mark. The rising water has also caused erosion along the riverbanks.

For the past two days, the northern district of Lalmonirhat has seen heavy rainfall, ranging from light to moderate and even heavy downpours. While the rain has brought relief to some, it has severely impacted homeless individuals and daily wage earners who are unable to work due to the weather.

The meteorological department recorded 130 millimeters of rainfall in Rangpur over the last 24 hours.

The heavy rainfall has caused water levels to rise in several rivers, including the Teesta and Dharla.

Mohammad Rashedin, deputy engineer of the Dalia branch of the Water Development Board, confirmed that the Teesta's water level is still below the danger level.

All 44 gates of the Teesta Barrage have been opened, and the water level is rising due to continued rainfall, he added.

Ziaul Haque Zia, acting chairman of Goddimari Union in Hatibandha Upazila, also said that the rising water has caused some roads to be submerged, creating transportation challenges for the locals.
