Update : 26 Sep 2024, 03:46 PM

A two-year-old child was killed in an accident when a motorcycle was hit by the car of the Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner (DC).

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Tanjim, son of Md Shahin from Ramu upazila. The child’s mother, Rubina Akhter, 32, was also injured in the accident.

The incident took place on Thursday at around 9:30am in the Kaimyarghona area of Dakkhin Mithachhari Union along the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf road.

The identity of the motorcyclist, who was also injured in the accident, is yet to be known.

Jasim Uddin Chowdhury, additional superintendent of police (Traffic) of Cox's Bazar, said that Cox's Bazar DC Mohammad Salahuddin was on his way to Ukhiya for administrative work in his vehicle.

When their vehicle reached Kaimyarghona in Ramu upazila, it collided with a recklessly speeding motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. The impact caused the motorcycle to smash and fall onto the pedestrian mother and her child.

Both Rubina and her son Tanjim were injured in the accident.

The DC himself got out of his car and, with the help of his companions, rescued the injured and took them to Cox's Bazar District General Hospital.

However, the on-duty doctor declared the child dead. The names of the two motorcyclists are still unknown.

Ashiqur Rahman, resident medical officer (RMO) of Cox's Bazar District General Hospital, said that two people injured in the accident were brought to the hospital.

“However, the two-year-old died on his way to the hospital. The mother has been sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment,” he said.

The body of the deceased is in the hospital morgue, the doctor added.
