Water crisis at Barisal hospital puts patients in peril

Officials said that the situation arose due to a bursting pipe

Update : 25 Sep 2024, 10:33 PM

Patients and staff members at the 100-bed Barisal General Hospital have been facing a severe water crisis for the last two days after the connection line was disrupted.

Patients, their relatives, and nurses spend days and nights without water at the facility.

Officials said that the situation arose due to a bursting pipe.

Resident Medical Officer Dr Malay Krishna Baral said: “I was in Dhaka when the burst pipe was discovered. As soon as I came to Barisal I informed the Public Health Engineering Department of the situation.”

Patients complained the hospital authorities provided them with some water from outside, but that needed to be improved.

There are over 150 patients admitted to the hospital currently. The number of people at the hospital surpasses 500, including relatives and caregivers.

Mehdi Hasan, deputy assistant engineer of the Public Health Engineering Department in Barisal, said they tried to fix the connection, but it is taking longer than expected.

“Now a new tube well has to be installed,” he added.

Barisal Civil Surgeon Dr Maria Hasan said the departments concerned have been informed of the situation.
