The Comilla Export Processing Zone (EPZ) has been closed for two days, due to flooding.
Further actions will be taken based on the situation.
Abdullah Al Mahbub, Executive Director of Comilla EPZ, confirmed this following a meeting on Saturday.
According to a source from Comilla EPZ, water from certain parts of the city entered the EPZ through the South Chartha area and eventually flowed into the Dakatia River via the Bijoypur Canal.
However, on Friday and Saturday, rising water levels in the Dakatia River prevented rainwater from draining out of the EPZ area, resulting in about 4-5 feet of accumulated water inside the zone.
Several factories, including Jing Chang, USB Textile, Golden Chang Suses, Bangladesh Textile, and Netway Outdoor, have been inundated.
As workers were unable to work on Saturday, the EPZ was immediately closed. After discussions with investors, the decision was made to close the Comilla EPZ for two days.
Executive Director Abdullah Al Mahbub said: "Water from parts of the city flows into the Dakatia River through two drains in the EPZ. Water is entering from the opposite direction as well, disrupting the ability of employees to come to work and potentially causing health issues.
“Given the flood situation, the investors decided to close the EPZ for the next two days. The EPZ was closed on Saturday as well. We hope that once the situation improves, operations will resume as before," he added.
