The Fire Service has recovered the body of a youth 33 hours after he went missing in the Manu River in Rajnagar, Moulvibazar.
Sadik Hossain Hriday, 19, disappeared while fishing with his father.
On Saturday, Hriday’s body was discovered in the Pudinapur area of Rajnagar Sadar Union.
Hriday, a resident of Medinimahal village in Munshibazar Union, was the son of Sonawor Ali and worked as a furniture businessman in Munshibazar.
Residents had flocked to the area known as Maynar’s shop following a breach of the Manu River embankment, which caused floodwaters to bring an influx of fish into the area.
According to witnesses and the Fire Service, Hriday and his father had been fishing with a boat net on Thursday night.
At around 12:30am, Hriday threw the net into the water. As he was adjusting the net, he was pulled into the river by the strong current.
Despite his father’s immediate attempt to rescue him, Hriday was quickly swept away by the current, and no one else was able to venture into the water to help due to the dangerous conditions.
The floodwaters had caused power outages across several villages in Rajnagar, making it difficult for the local Fire Service to conduct rescue operations in the dark.
On Saturday morning local residents reported seeing Hriday’s body.
Fire Service personnel subsequently recovered his body, which was found entangled in a net.
