Water has flooded the local areas through breaches in the flood control embankments of the Muhuri, Kahuya, and Silonia rivers in Feni, causing widespread inundation.
With the worsening flood situation, over 350,000 people in the district are now marooned and have been suffering immensely without electricity.
Due to the disruption of all communication links, flood-affected people are experiencing severe hardship.
It has been reported that since Monday night, the floodwaters have damaged power lines, leading to widespread power outages in most areas of the Parshuram, Fulgazi, and Chhagalnaiya Upazilas.
As the flood situation worsened, power connections were completely cut off from Tuesday in these three Upazilas as well as in parts of Sonagazi and Daganbhuiyan Upazilas.
Additionally, heavy rains have caused waterlogging in Feni district town, resulting in a complete power shutdown from midday through the night.
Abdur Rahman, a resident of Satkuchia in Parshuram, said that floodwaters have submerged all houses and buildings. Due to the intense current, rescue efforts are being hampered. Additionally, the lack of electricity and mobile network coverage is worsening the situation, making the flood conditions even more severe.
Feni's Rural Electrification Board’s General Manager, Haoladar Mohammad Fazlur Rahman, stated that out of the 400,000 customers in the district, over 300,000 are currently without electricity.
Heavy rains have damaged power lines in various areas. As of 6pm, electricity supply remains normal in some areas of Sonagazi and Daganbhuiyan Upazilas.
Feni Power Development Board’s Assistant Engineer Alamgir Hossain said that nearly 70% of customers are currently without electricity.
There is no possibility of restoring connections before the floodwaters recede. The situation is worsening over time, said the official.
Earlier in the afternoon, the army began rescue operations using speedboats to help people trapped in flood-affected areas. At the same time, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel and hundreds of district volunteers are conducting all-day rescue missions and providing food assistance.
