The Akhaura land port in Brahmanbaria has been inundated due to an onrush of water from upstream in the Indian state of Tripura, causing water to rise in at least 25 nearby villages.
A temporary bridge on the Akhaura-Agartala road has also collapsed, leading to a halt in traffic.
Local and administrative sources reported that heavy rains began in Akhaura on Tuesday night.
By Wednesday morning, water from India started rapidly entering the canal running alongside the port. This led to flooding in at least 25 villages, including Akhaura land port, Bautla, Birchandrapur, Kalikapur, Bangerchar, and Saheb Nagar. The temporary bridge on the Akhaura-Agartala road in the Gazir Bazar area also gave way under the pressure of the water.
On Tuesday, parts of the Haora River embankment breached in the Khalapara area, causing water to pour into the region.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ghazala Parveen Ruhi visited the affected area upon receiving the news.
Md Jalal Uddin, chairman of Akhaura South Union Parishad, said that water began rushing in from India at high speed in the morning. In addition to flooding several villages, the temporary bridge on the Akhaura-Agartala road collapsed, leaving the entire port area submerged.
The UNO confirmed that several villages have been flooded, and local residents have already begun repairing part of the dam. The Roads and Highways Department has been informed to address the collapsed bridge.
