Relentless overnight rain submerged large parts of the capital, leaving roads waterlogged, worsening traffic congestion and disrupting the morning commute for thousands of office-goers and students.
The rain, which began overnight, continued unabated into the morning, inundating roads in Dhanmondi, Mirpur, Mouchak, Malibagh, Karwan Bazar, Motijheel and several parts of Old Dhaka.
In many areas, knee-deep water accumulated on roads, with several vehicles breaking down after being stranded in the floodwater.
Heavy traffic and a shortage of public transport forced many office-goers to wade through water to reach their workplaces, while others waited in the rain for buses.
Farid Ahmed, who was waiting for a bus at Karwan Bazar, said many roads in Green Road and Kalabagan were under water.
"I somehow reached Karwan Bazar, but there are very few buses heading to Motijheel. Rickshaw fares are as high as CNG auto-rickshaw fares, and even CNGs are scarce," he said.
The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) said heavy overnight rainfall caused waterlogging on both sides of Kazipara Metro Station. It added that its teams were working continuously to drain the accumulated water and ease public suffering.
Flooded roads in front of several schools also disrupted academic activities, prompting some institutions to cancel classes and examinations.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), 76 millimetres of rainfall was recorded between midnight and 6:00 am on Sunday, the highest rainfall recorded so far this month.
The BMD has forecast rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds across most parts of the country later in the day.
