A Chhatra League activist named Rashed Sikder, 24, was beaten to death in Gournadi upazila of Barisal district for failing to pay a demanded toll.
Rashed was attacked by local youths who had asked him for money.
Gournadi police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwar Hossain confirmed the incident on Saturday.
He said that the body has been sent to the Barisal SBMCH morgue for autopsy, and legal action is being taken.
According to preliminary information from the victim’s relatives, Rashed, who lived in Dhaka, had recently visited his village home.
On Friday night, some local youths demanded a toll from him. When he did not comply, they assaulted him, severely injuring him with a blow to the head from a piece of wood.
Relatives said that Rashed was initially admitted to the Gournadi Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH).
Due to his critical condition, he was then taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died early Saturday while undergoing treatment.
The deceased’s father, Kalam Sikder, said that Rashed had been working in a plastic factory in Dhaka for a long time. He had come to visit his village house on Friday afternoon.
Following his visit, local miscreants launched a premeditated attack on him, resulting in serious injuries. The family is preparing to file a murder case in connection with this incident.
