At least 30 inmates escaped from Kushtia District Jail on Wednesday afternoon.
Kushtia District Commissioner Ehtasham Reza said several inmates escaped and later, the army took control of the facility.
To control the situation, troops fired blank shots, but could not recapture any of the inmates, he added. However, there was no report of any looting at the jail.
Deputy Jailer of Kushtia District Prison Md Aftabuzzaman told Dhaka Tribune that there was a murder accused named Sajeeb among the escapees. Sajeeb is also a Chhatra League leader, the jailer added.
According to the sources, relatives met with inmates in the morning. Around 2:30pm, several prisoners started escaping the jail by breaking the main gate.
Upon hearing this news, locals gathered in the jail area. Later, army personnel arrived at the scene and fired over 100 rounds of blank shots to bring the situation under control.
