At least 15 people, including police officers, were injured during clashes between protesters and the police in Faridpur on Saturday.

The protests were held to demand justice for recent killings.

The students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College initiated a protest march on their campus around 11am.

They were later joined by students from other educational institutions. The march proceeded towards the Bhanga Road intersection via the Dhaka-Barisal highway.

As the protesters reached the Goalachamot Model Mosque area near the old bus stand, police intervened and attempted to block their path, leading to a chase and counter-chase.

Tensions escalated further as protesters began hurling bricks and stones at the police. Law enforcers resorted to tear gas and sound grenades to disperse the crowd.

The protesters later took position on the Dhaka-Barisal highway in front of the western Khobaspur Shamsul Ulum Madrasa.

Ahaduzzaman Roni, an injured protester, said: "When the peaceful procession reached the Bhanga Road intersection, the police and Chhatra League fired bullets and threw bricks at us, injuring many."

Among the injured were journalists Shraban Hasan, correspondent of Ajker Kagoj, Zakib Hossain of Daily Fatehabad, and Zahir Uddin, correspondent of Dhaka Post, who were covering the clash.

A female police official was also reported injured while throwing tear gas shells at the protesters.

Faridpur Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hasanuzzaman said: “I heard that she was injured. I cannot say now how many more rounds or tear gas canisters were fired.”

Police, maintaining a distance from the protesters, urged them to carry out their demonstration peacefully.
