Death toll in Ukhiya landslides rises to 10

The landslides affected Rohingya camps No. 1, 8, 9, 10, and 14 of Ukhiya

Eight Rohingyas and two local residents died in separate landslides on Wednesday morning in Ukhiya Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar.

The landslides occurred at around 5am, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Tanvir Hossain told Dhaka Tribune.

Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Md Mizanur Rahman said the landslides affected Rohingya camps No. 1, 8, 9, 10, and 14 of Ukhiya from Tuesday midnight to Wednesday morning.

Among the deceased, one person died in Camp No. 1, one in Camp No. 8, three in Camp No. 9, four in Camp No. 10, and one in Camp No. 14.

The deceased in Camp No. 10 are Abu Meher, 25, son of Abul Kalam of Block 10; Abul Kalam, 57, son of Lal Mia; Salima Khatun, 42, daughter of Matiur Rahman, and Zainab Bibi, 19, daughter of Sharif Hossain.

In Camp No. 9, the deceased are Md Hossain Ahmed, 50, son of Ali Johar of Keranihat area of Satkania upazila of Chittagong, Anwara Begum, 18, daughter of Ali Johar of Block I4, and Salman, 3, son of Md Jamal of Block I9.

In Camp No. 8, Md Harez, 4, son of a resident of Block B-82, was killed.

Abdul Karim, 12, son of Thaingkhali Shah Alam of Palongkhali union of Ukhia upazila, was killed in the hilly area adjacent to Camp No. 14.

Putni Begum, 34, daughter of Sultan Ahmad of Block F/5, was killed in Camp No. 1.

Md Mizanur Rahman said that at 6am on Wednesday, four people were killed in a landslide in Camp No. 10. Two units of the fire service carried out the rescue operation and recovered the bodies.

The landslide occurred in Camp No. 9 at 3am on Tuesday. Three bodies were recovered there. Around 4am, two people died in mountain collapses in Camps No. 8 and 14. One person died in a landslide at Camp No. 1 around 4am. No injuries were reported.

The RRRC confirmed that two of the deceased were local residents. Hossain Ahmed from the Satkania area of Chittagong, who died in Camp No. 9, was staying in the camp due to various reasons. Abdul Karim, who died in Camp No. 14, had a house next to the camp.

Mizanur Rahman said the rescue operation has been completed, and 500 families living in the camp have been evacuated. Authorities are checking if anyone else is at risk and are removing them as necessary.
