This year, the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) earned Tk2.25 crore from selling 6,227 animals over 7 days at the Khulna Joragate sacrificial cattle market. Last year, sales of 6,020 animals brought in more than Tk2.21 crore.
KCC's sacrificial animal market supervisor, MA Majed, confirmed this information.
He said: “Sales typically peak in the last two days of the market. This year, favourable weather on these days meant smooth trading of sacrificial animals, resulting in increased revenue.
“Sales started on June 10 and ended at 4am on June 17. During this period, 6,227 animals were sold, including 3,960 cows, 2,143 goats, 122 sheep, and 2 buffaloes, generating Tk2.25 crore for KCC. Last year, the sale of 6,020 animals brought in Tk2.21 crore.”
The KCC-managed market provides all the necessary facilities for buyers and sellers. However, this year saw an increase of 207 animals sold compared to last year, with a revenue increase of Tk400,000.
In 2022, 6,760 animals were sold over seven days, generating over Tk2.25 crore. In 2021, 6,940 animals, including 5,280 cows, 1,630 goats, and 21 others, were sold at this market. From this, KCC earned over Tk2.43 crore.
In 2020, 6,169 animals were sold, including 4,772 cows, 1,360 goats, and 36 other animals, generating over Tk1.64 crore. In 2019, 7,805 animals were sold, including 6,144 cows, 1,656 goats, and 5 sheep. From this, KCC earned TK2.89 crore.
In 2018, revenue was over Tk1.65 crore from the sale of 7,032 animals, including 5,382 cows and 1,642 goats.
In 2017, revenue was over Tk2.10 crore from the sale of 8,403 animals, including 6,737 cows, 1,657 goats, and 5 sheep.
Every year the KCC sets up this animal market at Joragate wholesale raw market for the trading of sacrificial animals. Previously managed by contractors, since 2011, KCC has taken over management, significantly increasing revenue through this market.
