Another round of heavy rain inundates Sylhet city

  • 220mm of rainfall was recorded from 9am to 12pm on Saturday
  • Many roads have knee-deep water

Sylhet city has gone underwater in only five hours of rain, causing significant disruption for residents as water inundated several houses.

The downpour started at around 8pm and lasted until 1am on Sunday, leading to waterlogging in multiple areas, including Upashahar, Teratan, Bagbari, West Kajalshah, Dargah Mahalla, Jalalabad, and Taltala.

Journalist Ahmed Yasin Khan, a resident of Bagbari West Kajalshah area, said: "Knee-deep water has accumulated in my house due to the rain. Many items in the house were destroyed. In the last few days, the floodwater has entered three times in the house.”

He added that many roads around the city now have knee-deep water. 

Shah Mohammad Sajib Hossain, assistant meteorologist at Sylhet Met office, said 220mm rainfall was recorded in the city from 9am to 12pm on Saturday. 

And from 6pm to 9pm, 3mm of rain was recorded. Besides, there was no rainfall in Sylhet in the last 24 hours till 6am on Saturday, the official said.

Since Cyclone Remal recently struck Bangladesh, Sylhet has been experiencing flash floods. 

Several villages have been inundated in the past few days, leaving thousands of people stranded.
