Following Cyclone Remal's rampage, 100 animal carcasses, including deer, have been recovered in the Sundarbans.
Carcasses of 96 deer and four wild pigs were recovered from different places in Sundarbans in the last five days. At this time, 18 more deer and a python were rescued and released in the forest.
Mihir Kumar Doe, conservator of the forest of Khulna region, confirmed this on Thursday.
He said that during the cyclone, deer could not swim and take shelter at higher places due to high tides flowing into the Sundarbans. Deer can die due to this. The height of the tide in the Sundarbans was almost eight to ten feet.
Among other losses of the forest department, he mentioned, tin sheds, windows and doors, solar panels, wireless systems and infrastructure were damaged in the patrol offices. Eastern Forest Division's Katka Sanctuary’s jetty and pond have disappeared into the Bay of Bengal.
Various forest offices including Dubla, Katka, Kochikhali, Bagi and 25 patrol outpost’s kitchens and infrastructure tin sheds were blown away. As 80 freshwater source ponds of Sundarbans have been submerged in saline water due to high, forest workers, as well as animals, are facing a shortage of fresh water, he added.
