A child died after falling into a water-filled pothole on his way home from a shelter in Hatiya upazila of Noakhali on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred in Islampur village of Nijhum Dwip union.

The deceased, Manna, 12, was the son of Nabi Uddin from Moktar Bari in Islampur village.

Nurul Afsar Md Dinaz Uddin, chairman of Nijhum Dwip union, confirmed the information.

He said that tidal currents had damaged the road, creating a deep hole. While returning home from the shelter, Manna fell into the pothole and drowned.

Local sources reported that nine villages of Nijhum Dwip union were submerged due to tidal water and heavy rain caused by Cyclone Remal. Consequently, residents sought refuge in nearby buildings. Manna, along with his family, stayed at a shelter.

Hatiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Subhashish Chakma said: "I received news of the death of a child on the way home from the shelter. The local chairman has confirmed the matter."
