Cyclone Remal: Chittagong Port Authority suspends all activities

The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has issued the highest alert, Alert-4, to prevent damage from Cyclone Remal, resulting in a complete halt to port operations.

Alert-4 was issued at Chittagong Port at 9:30am after the Bangladesh Meteorological Department raised the alert signal to number 9 on Sunday, said Omar Faruq, secretary of Chittagong Port Authority.

The CPA secretary said that since the BMD’s signal exceeded great danger signal no 9.  the unloading of goods at the outer anchorage has been stopped. 

He added that no new ships are being anchored at the jetty, and the mother vessels will remain at the outer anchorage. Additionally, lighter ships are being moved upstream of the Karnaphuli River. Instructions have been given to secure all operational equipment at the port jetty.

The BMD has asked Mongla and Payra ports to hoist great danger signal no 10 as cyclonic storm Remal now lies over Northwest Bay and the adjoining areas. 

The coastal districts -- Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, Barguna, Bhola, and Patuakhali will be under great danger signal number 10.

The met office published the forecast on its website on Sunday morning.

Cyclone Remal has now intensified into a severe cyclonic storm.

The cyclone is predicted to make landfall on Sunday, affecting the coasts of Bangladesh and India’s West Bengal.
