8 injured as fire engulfs passenger launch in Meghna

  • Nearly four hundred passengers were on board the launch
  • The launch was saved from major damage by being towed ashore

8 passengers were injured when a fire broke out in the engine of a launch in the Meghna Char area of Haimchar Upazila of Chandpur.

Haimchar Naval Police Sub-Inspector (Inspector) Jahangir Hossen reported that the incident occurred on the Dhaka-bound Karnaphuli-3 launch, which departed from Bhola around 11:00am on Saturday.

“There were about 400 passengers in the launch. After the accident, the launch was saved from major damage by being towed ashore. The fire was brought under control by the efforts of the naval police and locals,”He said.

According to a naval police officer,the injured were given local treatment

Shahadat Hossen, a Chandpur Port and Transport official, said: "The fire is currently under control. About half of the passengers from Karnaphuli-3 have been transferred to Dhaka through Karnaphuli-4 launch. Others will be transported to their destination by another launch. The master of the Karnaphuli-4 launch, Mr. Mobarak Hossen, confirmed the incident to me."

"Our investigation team is working at the scene to determine how the fire started on the launch,"He added.

Meanwhile, Senior Naval Police Chandpur officers visited the place after hearing the news.
