Corruption allegations proven against Bogra's Sherpur mayor

Khoka, who was expelled from the post of Sherpur Upazila BNP president, has been found guilty of eight charges of corruption

Bogra’s Sherpur Municipal Mayor Jane Alam Khoka has claimed that the allegations of corruption against him are false and fabricated.

Khoka, who was expelled from the post of Sherpur Upazila BNP president, has been found guilty of eight charges of corruption. Therefore, he was asked to show reasons within 10 days as to why he should not be removed.

The letter, signed by Md Abdur Rahman, deputy secretary of the Local Government Division (Municipal 1 Branch), was issued on March 27. Copies of the letter have been sent to various departments concerned.

Talking to Dhaka Tribune on Friday, the mayor acknowledged receiving the letter two days ago. He blamed his political and other opponents. “There may have been irregularities, but there was no corruption. I will respond to the letter soon.”

Municipal panel chairman Nazmul Alam Khokon said a citizen named Nazmul Haque Lulu of Bikal Bazar area complained of corruption against Mayor Khoka in the ministry a few months ago. The director of Rajshahi Divisional Local Government Division has investigated the matter.

The letter reads eight allegations of misappropriation of municipal funds, and various irregularities and corruption against the mayor have been proven in the investigation.

The proven allegations include embezzlement of money in the name of allotment of various shops owned by the municipality, illegal waiver of lease of Dhunat Mor Bus Terminal of the municipality for 2020 and 2021, wrongdoing in the master roll, expenditure of Tk10 lakh on jeep repair, and non-allotment of the municipal kitchen market. The other allegations are corruption and irregularities in various municipal purchases, municipal house tax assessments, and extra taxation on buildings and land.

The show cause letter was issued as per Section 32(1)(d) of the Local Government (Municipalities) Act 2009.

Bogra Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam and Deputy Director of Local Government Department Hasib Beg said that they had not yet received the show cause notice.
