A fire that broke out at a factory owned by TK Group Gajaria upazila of Munshiganj on Sunday afternoon has yet to be brought under control, after over seven hours.
Twelve units of the fire service were working to put out the fire at the time of writing.
Seven people – an Ansar member and six factory workers – were injured while trying to douse the blaze.
They were later admitted to Gajaria Upazila Health Complex.
Fire Service Dhaka Zone Deputy Director Md Saleh Uddin said the fire broke out at the factory in the Jamaldi at around 1pm.
“The fire is almost under control. As a result, there is no possibility of it spreading. But it is not fully under control. Twelve units along with a modern firefighting robot are working,” he added.
Workers said they saw the fire in the jute warehouse of the factory at around 1pm. They first tried to put it out, but upon being unable to do it, they informed the fire service.
Rifat Mallik, the person in charge of Gajaria fire station, said: "Two units of Gajaria fire station started working on controlling the fire first. Later, 10 more units from Narayanganj and Dhaka joined them. Due to the presence of flammable material inside, it is getting hard to fully extinguish the fire.”
Saiful Atahar Taslim, director of the Superboard Bangladesh factory, said: “I cannot say for sure how the fire started. I am not sure about the extent of damage either.”
Gajaria Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kohinur Akhtar said: “Fire service personnel are working to control the fire. It has now reached a somewhat tolerable level.”
The district administration formed a five-member probe committee headed by Additional District Commissioner Masudur Rahman to look into the incident.
It was asked to submit its report within the next seven working days.
