Due to the renovation of the First Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge, also known as Postogola Bridge, on the Buriganga River, severe traffic jam has occurred on Buriganga Bridge-2 since Saturday morning.
This traffic jam was caused by the entry of Dhaka-bound passenger transport from Barisal, Faridpur, Madaripur, Khulna, Jessore.
Traffic jams also occur on other roads of Keraniganj. Working people of Keraniganj were seen crossing Buriganga bridge on foot.
Many transport passenger buses and hundreds of goods vehicles got stuck at Buriganga Bridge-2. These transports were supposed to enter towards capital city, Jatrabari, Syedabad, Arambagh, and Fakirapool bus counters.
Mohammad Masud Rahman, the driver of Shyamoli Paribahan, told Samakal: “The renovation work of Postgola Bridge is going on. I left the bus from Barisal to Dhaka early in the morning. I will go to Jatrabari counter through Babubazar Bridge. However, there is traffic jam on Babubazar Bridge since morning.”
Dhaka-bound passenger Mohammad Azgar Ali Mia said that it took much longer to enter Dhaka than the time it took to come from Barisal in the morning. Due to heavy traffic, most of the passengers were getting down from the cars and entering the capital on foot.
Mohammad Zakir Hossain of the South Traffic Zone (TI) of Dhaka district told Samakal that due to the renovation work of the first bridge of the Buriganga River (Postagola), the traffic jam has been created at the Babubazar Bridge.
The Roads and Highways Department had earlier advised vehicles traveling on the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Expressway to use alternative routes due to maintenance work.
The work will begin on February 19 and is expected to finish March 6.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, the department said that two girders of the Bangladesh-China Friendship Buriganga Bridge-1 will be repaired and retrofitted.
