At least 10 people were injured including three sustaining shots in a clash between two groups of Awami League over dominance in Bakultala area of Adhara Union of Munshiganj Sadar.
The incident took place in the area adjacent to Bakultala High School of the union around 12pm on Tuesday.
According to witnesses and police, the clash arose from a previous dispute between Suruj Mia, the former UP member and general secretary of Adhara Union Awami League, and Ali Hossain Sarkar, the president of Ward No. 2 of that union, over territorial dominance.
As a result of this dispute, in the area adjacent to Bakultala High School, under the leadership of Hanif Dewan and Shamim, followers of Union Awami League General Secretary Suruj Mia allegedly ambushed and fired upon Ward Awami League President Ali Hossain's supporters.
Three youths named Shakeel, 22, Jewel, 25, and Ayanal, 35, followers of Ali Hossain, were shot. Seven others were injured.
Shakeel and Jewel, with bullet wounds, were transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for advanced treatment, while the rest received local medical attention. The injured were initially taken to Munshiganj General Hospital.
Following the incident, it is reported that supporters of Ali Hossain, the ward Awami League president, vandalized five shops belonging to their opponents in the village and set off crude bombs.
Adhara Union Awami League General Secretary Suruj Mia mentioned regarding the attack: "Our supporters vandalized about seven shops, and around 20 crude bombs were launched by Ali Hossain's people. Four to five of us were injured in this. However, I am unaware about the gunshots."
Ali Hossain Sarkar, president of Adhara Union Ward No. 2 Awami League, countered: "Suruj Mia's people ambushed our people with local weapons in Bakultala area. In this, three people named Jewel, Shakeel, and Aynal were shot. A few others were injured. However, I do not know about the vandalism of their shop."
Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Thunder Khairul Hasan said that the incident took place due to a power struggle.
“Additional police forces were deployed to the area after receiving information, and the situation is now under control. Legal action will be initiated after a thorough investigation,” he added.
