There are at least 15 dangerous turns in the 15-km road from Jaintapur to Jaflong and these risky points have been blamed for frequent accidents by those concerned with road safety.
One such turn is widely blamed for the deaths of four BCL activists on the road on Friday night.
According to highway police, the private car carrying four friends fell into a nearby pond at Lakshmipur in Bangla Bazar area on Tamabil Road due to reckless driving. The deceased Nihal Pal's father, Bandhir Pal, has filed an accidental death case with the Jaintapur police station and an investigation is underway.
Excessive speed and the sharp turn on the road have both been blamed for the accident.
Sub-inspector Md Yunus, in charge of Tamabil outpost of highway police, said even though no evaluation has been conducted, there are at least 15 severely accident-prone turns in the Jaintapur-Jaflong section of this road.
Jaintapur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tajul Islam said that there is a small bridge as well as a slight turn in the accident area. Narrow bridges and turns can cause accidents.
Jaintapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sajedul Islam said that no investigation committee has been formed for Friday's accident. However, the hospital authorities filed a case with the police regarding the vandalism that followed the accident.
Journalist Nurul Islam of Jaintapur said that there have been several accidents in the same area. The narrow bridge on that road is responsible for most of the accidents, and it is necessary for the authorities to take action in this regard.
Case filed against 300 BCL activists
A case has been filed against 300 BCL leaders and activists in connection with the vandalism of upazila health complex following the death of 4 BCL activists in a road accident in Jaintapur.
Jaintapur Upazila Health Complex UHFPO Dr Md Salauddin Mia filed the case on Saturday night.
Sylhet District Police Assistant Superintendent of Police and Media Officer Samrat Talukder said two ambulances, hospital furniture, and various emergency department equipment were vandalized. The perpetrators also beat up the doctors on duty and torched a car parked in the garage of the hospital.
