  • Ferry’s second engine master went missing after the capsize
  • Rescue ship Hamza unable to recover ferry
Update : 18 Jan 2024, 02:48 PM

The second engine master of the ferry Rajanigandha, which capsized in the Padma River in Paturia of Manikganj early Wednesday, is still missing.

Meanwhile, the rescue vessel Prattay is on the way to recover the ferry.

The missing crew member, Humayun Kabir, 45, hails from Bhandaria upazila of Pirojpur.

Fire Service Assistant Director (Dhaka division) Anwarul Haque said on Thursday that their divers arrived at the scene in the morning and the search for the missing engine master was still underway at around 10am.

The location of the ferry has been confirmed, he added.

Meanwhile, after being suspended for seven hours due to dense fog, ferry traffic resumed on the Daulatdia-Paturia route around 8am on Thursday.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Chairman Commodore Arif Ahmed Mostafa said: “The rescue ship Hamza could not recover the capsized ferry. For this reason, Prattay is being brought to the scene from Narayanganj. The rescue vessel is expected to arrive at the site by Thursday noon.”

The ferry capsized on the Daulatdia-Paturia route at 8:15am on Wednesday.

Shah Jahan, director (river preservation and management) of the Bangladesh Inland and Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), said efforts to rescue the ferry will start when Prattay arrives.

But the divers from the Bangladesh Navy have started work to salvage sunken trucks from the river, UNB quoted him as saying.

A truck has already been salvaged from the spot, said Shah Paran, head of the diver team.

They are trying to rescue the other sunken trucks, he added.
