The Home Ministry has suspended Hamidul Alam Milon, additional deputy inspector general of police (DIG), for campaigning in the upcoming general election for his wife and an independent candidate for Bogra-1, Sahazadi Alam Lipi, in violation of the electoral code of conduct.
Hamidul, posted at the Barisal Metropolitan Police as an additional commissioner, was attached to the police headquarters.
The home ministry issued an order in this regard on Thursday.
The order was issued a day after Bogra joint district and sessions judge Shahnaz Parvin served a show-cause notice to the police official and asked to appear before the district election investigation committee in person on Thursday.
Following Thursday’s session, the Election Inquiry Committee recommended the Election Commission (EC) to take action against the additional DIG.
Bogra Joint District and Sessions Judge Shahnaz Parvin confirmed the matter after Hamidul Haque Milon campaigning for his wife, an independent candidate in Bogra-1 constituency.
Joint District and Sessions Judge Court Peshkar Ariful Islam said on Thursday night that since the allegations have been proven, legal action against him has been recommended to the secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat.
In his defense, Hamidul Alam Milan, who was temporarily dismissed from duty on Thursday morning and attached to the police department, claimed innocence.
He said that he had been on medical leave from December 12 to 28 due to health issues, staying in Bogra city. Milan categorically denied involvement in the campaign activities and accused a political party of spreading false allegations to hinder his wife's chances of victory.
According to the show-cause notice, a news report revealed that Hamidul Haque Milon was campaigning for his wife, Shahazadi Alam Lipi, an independent candidate in Bogra-1 constituency.
On a month's leave from his government job, he is accused of misusing his power and a government vehicle for campaigning, disrupting the electoral process. His behaviour is considered both professional misconduct and a violation of the electoral code of conduct.
Incumbent MP and Awami League candidate for Bogra-1 constituency Shahdara Mannan, filed a written complaint on December 24.
