A female passenger is missing after a launch hit a cargo ship in the Meghna River in Ekhlaspur of Matlab Uttar upazila in Chandpur due to dense fog.
Rina went missing following the crash at around 11:30pm on Thursday when the passenger launch Sundarban-16 headed for Barisal from the capital's Sadarghat collided with the cargo ship Mercantile-3 anchored in the Meghna River.
As a result of the collision, the floor of the Sundarban-16 launch was cracked.
Later, with the help of two other launches, the passengers of the crashed launch were rescued and taken to their destination.
Confirming the matter, Moniruzzaman, in-charge of Mohanpur Naval Police Outpost, said that the Sundarban-16 launch left Dhaka at 9:30pm for Barisal with about five hundred passengers.
The launch collided with the cargo ship in the middle of the night due to thick fog.
He also said that some parts broke in the middle of the Sundarban-16 launch.
One passenger received an injury in her leg, said the official.
Chandpur Naval Police Superintendent Mohammad Kamruzzaman said that both the launch and cargo were damaged and kept at Ekhlaspur. All passengers were rescued with the help of naval police without any damage. Two launches Sundarban-15 and Sundarban-14 were brought to send passengers to their destination safely.
Apart from this, a young man's leg was broken in the incident and he was taken to Chandpur Sadar Hospital for treatment, said the police official.
A search is on for a woman passenger who went missing in the river.
