Constable killed as train hits police van in Jamalpur

  • Gate of the crossing was not pulled down, claims locals 
  • Another constable was injured

A police constable was killed and another was injured after a local train hit a police van at a rail crossing in Jamalpur's Sadar upazila early Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Ahsanul Haque, 32, son of Nazrul Islam, resident of Rajnagar village in Kamlakanda upazila in Netrokona and a constable of Sadar police station.

Another constable, Ariful Islam, was also in the incident.  

He was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital in critical condition, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mahabbat Kabir of the Sadar police station. 

The OC said that a Dewanganj-bound train hit the patrol police van at Shekhervita rail crossing area around 4:15am, leaving Ahsanul dead on the spot and Ariful injured. 

According to local sources, when the Dewanganj-bound local train from Dhaka was crossing the railway crossing in Shekervita area, the gate of the crossing was not pulled down.
