Over 200 RMG workers hurt in Comilla as earthquake causes panic

Over 200 garment workers in Comilla's Chauddagram have been injured while rushing out of the factory building of Amir Shirts in panic during Saturday's earthquake.

Confirming the matter, Chauddagram Upazila Medical Officer Golam Kibria said: “Our multiple teams are working to serve the injured. It is not possible to tell the exact number of how many people have been admitted so far. The number of injured may increase. But no one was seriously injured.”

Chauddagram police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Trinath Saha said: “I heard that many people were injured while rushing down due to the earthquake. We are trying to get details on this.”

A moderate earthquake jolted Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh on Saturday morning, creating panic among the people who felt light to strong shakes.

The quake, measuring 5.6 magnitude on the Richter Scale, was felt at 9:35am. It lasted for a few seconds, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The epicentre of the earthquake was located in Comilla district. The epicentre was 86km from the BMD Seismic Centre in Agargaon, Dhaka.

However, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.5. The quake originated at a depth of 10km with the epicentre about 8km east-northeast of Ramganj in Lakshmipur.
