The arrestees include Manikganj BNP Vice President Azad Hossain Khan and municipality BNP chief Nasir Uddin Jadu.

According to Arif Hossain Liton, the office secretary of the BNP’s Manikganj unit, BNP leaders and activists staged "a peaceful procession in support of the blockade, but police started chasing them when it tried to get on the Dhaka-Aricha highway."

"At the time, BNP leaders and activists started throwing brickbats at police, and police fired several rounds of blanks. Ten BNP leaders and activists were injured in the clash," he added.

Manikganj Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Rouf Sarker said BNP leaders and activists hurled brickbats at police, and police fired blanks to maintain order.

Five people were arrested on the spot, he added.
