Relentless rainfall since Friday inundated most parts of Sylhet city in the early hours of Saturday morning, causing waterlogging and severe inconvenience for residents.
Water breached homes and businesses, mixing with drain debris, compounding the residents' misery.
Unplanned urbanization has contributed to the city's ongoing waterlogging woes, with areas such as city suburbs, Jatarpur, Sabuj Bagh, Shibganj, Machimpur, Mendibagh, Pathantula, Chowhatta, Hawapara, Madina Market, Subid Bazar, Jalalabad, Laldighir Par, Shibganj, Lama Para, Akhalia, Rajar Goli, Baruthkhana, Jatarpur, Rhamarpar, and Taltala roads submerged under knee-deep water.
Mahbubur Rahman, a resident, said: "Waterlogging due to continuous rains has become unbearable. My house was flooded with water mixed with garbage, causing significant damage."
Noor Azizur Rahman, chief engineer of Sylhet City Corporation, explained that draining the water was challenging due to the heavy rain. The city corporation's team is actively working to resolve the situation. If blockages occur due to debris, immediate cleaning efforts are underway.
Sajib Ahmad, a meteorologist at the Sylhet Meteorological Department, reported 357.8mm of rainfall between 6am on Friday and 6am on Saturday, with an additional 102mm falling from 6am-9am on Saturday, exacerbating the flooding situation in the city.
