Approximately 1,500 tourists on Saturday found themselves stranded on Saint Martin Island as the Teknaf administration suspended vessel movement on the Teknaf-Saint Martin route due to adverse weather conditions.

The administration took this decision as the sea remains rough in hostile weather.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Adnan Chowdhury said: “Due to the hostile weather, no tourist ship from Teknaf was allowed to go to Saint Martin to avoid accidents.”

Besides, the movement of any kind of speedboat and wooden trawlers has been restricted.

As a result, more than 1,500 tourists who were visiting the island got stranded.

“They will be brought back when the weather will be normal,” said the UNO.

The low-pressure area over central North Bay of Bengal and adjoining area intensified into a well-marked low and now lies over northwest bay and adjoining area.

Under its influence, deep convection is taking place over North Bay and adjoining areas. Squally weather may affect the maritime ports, North Bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh, according to a Met Office release issued on Saturday morning.

Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no three.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.
