As the internal party nomination dispute in Natore district Awami League continues to escalate into violence, police have arrested three individuals in connection with an attack on Jubo League leader Nazmul Sheikh Bappi early Wednesday.
The arrestees are Sajib, 23, son of Shah Alam, Amir Hossain Imon, 25, son of Abdur Rahim and Dhrubo, 28, son of Shamim, hailing from Kandivita area of the Natore municipality.
They were presented to the Natore court on Wednesday afternoon and subsequently sent to jail showing arrested.
Nazmul Sheikh Bappi, Natore Jubo League member and joint general secretary of Natore District Truck, Tank-Lorry-Covered Van Sramik Federation, was attacked and hacked badly by unknown miscreants on Monday around 6pm.
He is now in critical condition and undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).
Following the attack, Bappi’s father Abdul Kuddus lodged a complaint on Tuesday night, naming Shamsul Moin as the main accused and identified 14 others, with an additional 8-10 unnamed suspects in the first information report (FIR) at Natore police station.
According to local sources, continuous attacks and counter-attacks are taking place in Natore due to internal disputes between the supporter groups of Shafiqul Islam Shimul, the member of parliament for the Natore-2 constituency, and Shariful Islam Ramzan, the general secretary of the Natore district unit of Awami League.
The injured Bappi is a follower of MP Shimul.
Bashirur Rahman Khan Chowdhury, acting president of Natore Jubo League, said that Bappi has been involved with the Jubo League's politics for a long time.
“Currently, grouping culture has entered into the politics in Natore and many Jubo League leaders and activists, including Bappi, are falling victim to this grouping system,” he said.
Natore police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nasim Ahmed said that a case has been filed regarding the attack on the Jubo League leader.
“The real perpetrators have been identified through CCTV footage and operations are being conducted in various areas of the district to nab them,” he added.
