The National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh (NHRC) has expressed its concerns over the torture of a student at a madrasa in Comilla by her principal.
The organization in a written statement sent out to the media on Wednesday said the news of the torture of the student came to its sight which said the student was hidden by “boro hujur” or the principal after he was burnt with an iron box.
The principal at the Mamtajia Hafizia Madrasa in Nayakandi kept the boy in a room for nine days under lock and key and tried to provide her treatment after the initial torture.
Later, the family came to know of the incident when they visited the madrasa with home-made food for their son. The mother of the student sued five teachers in a case filed at Homna Police Station in this regard and the police arrested one of them. But the other four, including the main suspect, are on the run.
The commission has asked the police to conduct a speedy investigation into the matter and send a report to the commission at the earliest.
It further requested the Comilla district administration to take action against the madrasa for running educational courses without permission.
The student is currently undergoing treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
