A private car was discovered submerged in a canal in Nabinagar upazila's Nathghar union of Brahmanbaria on Wednesday, sparking curiosity among locals.
After being notified, members of the local police and fire service retrieved the car from the water with the assistance of the locals.
Nabinagar police station Inspector (Investigation) Sohel Ahmed said that the car was found in the Nandura canal near Mahesh Road in Kurighar village.
Upon its discovery, locals quickly gathered at the site, followed by the arrival of police officers, Sohel Ahmed said.
"With the help of locals and the fire service, the car was pulled out of the water," he said, adding that a mobile phone and a shirt were found in the initial search.
An extensive search was also conducted in the canal's waters, but no other items were found, he added.
Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain said: "The car seems to be of an older model. We are thoroughly investigating how it ended up in the canal, who brought it there, and if it was intentionally abandoned.”
“We are exploring multiple angles, including potential involvement of drug traffickers, or if the car had been in an accident,” he said.
“We are also trying to identify the actual owner of the car based on its number plate through the BRTA database. We hope to soon resolve the mystery surrounding the vehicle,” he added.
