Fishermen find catfish in Narsingdi pond

A catfish has been found in a pond in Chinishpur village under Narsingdi Sadar upazila. Fishermen were surprised to spot it in a pond owned by one Mohammad Ali Fakir on Wednesday afternoon. Curious villagers gathered at Fakir’s house to see the fish. The fish was released in the pond after the curious crowd was treated to a close inspection of the catfish. Narsingdi Senior Fisheries Officer Tazmahal Begum told the Dhaka Tribune it was a suckermouth catfish. She claimed it is exotic to Bangladesh and harmful to other fish because of its carnivorous nature. Following the discovery, the Rangamati-based Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute has been testing the feasibility of cultivating the fish in Kaptai Lake. The suckermouth catfish is a tropical fish belonging to the armoured catfish family. It gets its name from the armour-like longitudinal rows of scutes on its upper body and head. It is popular among aquarium enthusiasts for its ability to clean algae inside tanks.
