The water level of the Jamuna River has continued to rise again at an alarming rate.
According to Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), there is no danger of heavy flooding even though the water level is increasing due to heavy rains and upstream water.
Ranjit Kumar Sarkar, sub-divisional engineer of BWDB, said that the water level of Jamuna river was recorded at Sirajganj hardpoint at 12.44 metres on Saturday.
The water is now flowing below 46cm of the danger mark following a rise of eight centimitres in the last 24 hours.
On the other hand, the water level was recorded at 14.80 meters at Meghai Point in Kazipur.
The water level increased 14cm in the last 24 hours and is now flowing below 66cm of the danger level.
Executive Engineer M Mahbubur Rahman of Sirajganj’s BWDB said: “Due to heavy rainfall upstream, the water in Jamuna is rising again."
The water will increase in the next three days and may cross the danger level.
However, there is no danger of heavy flooding, added the official.
Earlier, the Jamuna river’s water rose three times from late July to August 17 but did not cross the danger level.
Farming has been disrupted due to periodic inundation of the agricultural land in the char areas.
