Traffic resumes in Sajek, tourists returning

  • Over 20 vehicles off from Khagrachari-Sajek
  • Flash floods
  • Onrush of hill waters
Update : 10 Aug 2023, 05:37 PM

Traffic resumed on Thursday morning two days after Sajek's communication with Khagrachari was closed due to heavy rains, causing culverts in Dighinala and roads in Baghaihat getting submerged.

Tourist buses departed from Sajek for Khagrachari, while over 20 tourist vehicles set off from Khagrachari for Sajek.

Heavy rain on Tuesday triggered onrush of hill water, submerging a culvert on the main road in Dighinala upazila of Khagrachari. This led to the suspension of traffic between Khagrachari and Dighinala, as well as on the Sajek route to Dighinala. After two days, as the water receded, travel to and from Sajek was reinstated.

Md Alam, a lineman at the Khagrachari Sajek counter, said: "Traffic movement has resumed in Sajek since morning. Around 20-25 vehicles, both large and small, have departed for Sajek."

Joy Marma, vice president of the Sajek Resort Cottage Owners Association, mentioned: "Tourist vehicles are departing from Sajek to Khagrachari as the water recedes from the road. New tourists are starting to arrive in vehicles from Khagrachari."

Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rumana Akhter stated: "Traffic of tourists from Sajek has resumed this morning as the water has receded from the road."

Continuous heavy rainfall in the hilly districts has led to flash floods from upstream. The closure of the communication between Khagrachari and Sajek resulted in over three hundred tourists being stranded in Sajek.
