Mizanur Rahman Mija, the bus driver involved in the fatal crash on the Jessore-Magura highway, that claimed lives of seven people, has turned himself into police custody.
He was handed over to the police by the leaders of the Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Union and Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity on Saturday evening, confirmed Paribahan Sramik Union's General Secretary Selim Reza Mithu.
"The incident at Lebutala was deeply shocking and heartbreaking. The police are investigating whether the bus driver was involved in this incident. To aid the police investigation, bus driver Mizanur Rahman has been handed over to them,” said Selim Reza Mithu.
“The movement of buses, trucks, and other high-speed vehicles on the highway is frequently impeded due to the presence of a variety of vehicles such as easy-bikes, Nasimans, Karimans and three-wheelers,” he said.

“Different organizations have been protesting against this issue for a long time and demanding separate lanes for small vehicles; however, their demands have remained futile, leading to frequent accidents,” he remarked.
“Despite the High Court's order to ban these vehicles on the highway, the directive is not being followed,” the general secretary of Paribahan Sramik Union voiced concerns.
Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge Tajul Islam said Mizanur Rahman will be produced in court on Sunday.
The collision between a Magura-bound passenger bus of Royal Paribahan and a Jessore-bound easy-bike at Lebutala Bazar in Jessore Sadar upazila left three people dead on the spot and five injured.
Later, four more people succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital.
All the deceased and injured were easy-bike passengers.
Five of the victims belong to the same family.
