River erosion takes serious turn in Kushtia

  • Highway, power plant at risk from erosion
  • Locals if living in fear
Update : 25 Jul 2023, 10:30 PM

River erosion in Kushtia has taken a serious turn as level of water in the Padma River has increased due to incessant rains and water from upstream.

As a result, thousands of people in three union parishads (UP) of Mirpur and Bheramara are now spending days in fear of losing their properties. At least three areas under these three UPs have gone into the river already, including 15,000 acres of arable land.

Local people said river erosion has been a major concern in the area for ages.

Besides, the lone highway in the region and the Bheramara 410MW Combined Cycle Power Plant are also under threat by river erosion.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre on Tuesday said the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers were in a falling trend which may continue in the next 72 hours.

On the other hand, the Ganges River is in steady state while the Padma water is receding, which may continue in next 24 hours.

All the major rivers in the North-eastern region of the country are in a falling trend, which may continue in the next 48 hours, it added.

Meanwhile, a low pressure has formed over Westcentral Bay and adjoining Northwest Bay and the axis of monsoon trough runs through Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, the center of the low to Assam across southern part of Bangladesh.

Monsoon is less active over Bangladesh and moderate elsewhere over North Bay.

A mild heat wave is also sweeping over Dhaka, Rajshahi, Pabna, Feni and Chuadanga and it may continue, said a met office forecast.

Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions, at a few places over Rangpur and Chittagong divisions and at one or two places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barisal divisions with moderately heavy falls at places over Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.
