Members of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the police have recovered a large cache of military-grade explosives and ammunition at Satchhari National Park in Habiganj.
Some 15 rocket-propelled grenades (RPG), 510 rounds of machine gun ammunition and 25 boosters (used as a propelling charge in RPG launchers) were found during the special drive at a place that is around 3-4km off the border with Tripura.
CTTC unit chief Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Md Asaduzzaman led the operation that lasted from dawn to dusk on Monday.
“Police on Sunday night arrested a young man along with a firearm from Dhaka’s Jatrabari area. The man identified to be one Abel Tripura Amit is from the Panchhari area of Khagrachhari. Based on his confession, we decided to conduct the drive at Satchhari,” he told reports at Chunarughat police station in the afternoon.
According to CTTC Deputy Commissioner Mahfuzul Islam, terrorists gathered arms and ammunition in the forest.
Raids, recoveries
Since 2014, the law enforcement agencies have recovered several military-grade weapons, including rocket launchers and artillery shells, and other arms and ammunition from the national park, a popular tourist site, after conducting multiple raids.
From June 1 to September 17, 2014, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) recovered 334 artillery shells, 298 rocket chargers, a rocket launcher, 16 machine guns, a beta gun, six SLRs, an auto rifle and five empty machine gun barrels during a three-phase operation.
A huge cache of ammunition was also recovered from the forest at the time.
On October 17, 2014, three machine guns, four barrels, eight magazines, eight belts with a carrying capacity of 250 bullets and a high-power radio were recovered from the deep forest of the park.
A total of 9,454 rounds of bullets, including 8,360 rounds for SMG and LMG, 152 rounds for 303 rifles, 518 rounds for small arms and 425 rounds for machine guns were recovered on October 18 at noon.
On February 2, 2018, 10 high explosive 40mm anti-tank rockets were recovered during an operation at the national park.
On November 24, 2019, several explosives, including shells of 13 rocket launchers, were recovered from Satchhari.
On March 2 this year, the Border Guard Bangladesh conducted an operation and recovered 18 anti-tank rockets.
And lastly, on August 13, the BGB recovered nine single-barreled guns, three pistols and 19 rounds of ammunition from an abandoned bridge near Satchhari park.
