The Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) has decided to form a probe committee to look into the disputed “crack” in the pillar of the ramp on the MA Mannan flyover at Bahaddarhat in the city.
The decision was made at a meeting at the mayor's office at the city’s Tigerpass on Thursday.
CCC Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Panel Mayor Gias Uddin, Chief Engineer Rafiqul Islam and others were present at the meeting.
It was decided to form an impartial inquiry team made up of engineers from Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) and the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) to investigate the apparent crack that recently appeared in the MA Mannan flyover pillar.
In this regard, CCC has sent letters to Cuet and the RHD soliciting members for the committee.
Panel Mayor Gias Uddin said: “There was some disagreement over whether the flyover ramp's pillar was actually cracked or not. As a result, an investigative committee has been constituted to conduct an impartial probe into the issue.”
Earlier on Wednesday, after the inspection a team of engineers from Design Planning and Management (DPM) said the cracks, shown on viral social media photos, were basically construction joints. The foam provided for shuttering in that joint came out and created panic among local residents.
Engineer MA Sobhan, managing director of DPM Consultants, said since discussions had started on the issues of the flyover, more in-depth testing would be done.
On Monday, a man named Muhammad Mohiuddin posted a photo on a Facebook group named “Praner Chittagong,” which showed a crack in a pillar on the Arakan Road ramp of the MA Mannan Flyover.
Later, the photo went viral on social media. After verifying the authenticity of the post, police had stopped traffic on the ramp from Monday night to prevent an accident. During a visit on Tuesday morning, CCC Mayor M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury blamed the CDA for the cracks due to construction defects.
